In a parallel universe – a perfect world where there are no wars, bigots, R Kelly’s or deathcore bands – Illuminati Hotties instead released an EP, and in that parallel universe this would be my review of that EP:
”POOL HOPPING EP:
1. Pool Hopping
3. Joni: LA’s No. 1 Health Goth
4. Cheap Shoes
Wow, what an EP. Rebellious, catchy and cocky. Illuminati Hotties sound like a modern take on X-Ray Spex with Sonic Youth and Blondie influences. It feels like anything can happen and that you don’t wanna miss out on a second of the party. Pool Hopping is one the best songs of the year. This is how fun punk rock should sound in 2021. The last song, the vulnerable Growth, has a Skinny Love (Bon Iver) quality to it, and creates peaceful variation on an EP filled with action, attitude and hotness – illuminati style. The EP of the year so far!
Back to reality. That EP doesn’t exist. Let Me Do One More exists though, the bands new album released the other day. And it knocks me down completely with the first two songs and creates huge expectations.
But then something sad happens. Apparently Illuminati Hotties haven’t at all understood their strenghts yet. About 60% of the album tries to be more grown up and sounds like some kind of cute, psuedo emotional, mid pace indie rock. Sometimes the band Girls and their greit album Album comes to mind. Only that Girls did that thing much better.
It’s a shame that the obvious talent the band possess isn’t taken fully advantage of. It’s absolutely clear to me that the faster, funnier and punkier songs are exactly the style the band should go for. When they play faster and go loco something magic really happens.
However, since I love about five songs I can’t hate on it. And I admit that the less good songs aren’t bad, at all. I just got disappointed after the raging start of the album. There’s so much potential here. But the fragile indie rock snivelling quota is already filled with a zillion bands that are much better on that.
So please, Illuminati Hotties, I beg you. Do an album with at least 80% noisy, fun, catchy punk rock next time. Because you’re world class in that field.
